Theatre Centre commissions, produces
and tours new theatre for young audiences. Founded in 1953 by
Brian Way, the company remains committed to his principles of
access and intimacy. Theatre Centre pioneered in-the-round staging
and led the theatre industry in making opportunities for women
and minority ethnic artists. It has strengthened its mission to
bring unheard voices to the stage through the Authentic Voices
programme which gives teenage writers rigorous, professional mentoring
and support.
Now based in Shoreditch Town Hall,
Theatre Centre visits schools and theatres across London and the
UK. Plays undergo exacting development and are carefully presented
for specific age ranges. In recent years writers have included
Roy Williams, Benjamin Zephaniah, Noël Greig, Angela Turvey, Manjinder
Virk and Sarah Woods. At the time of writing the company is working
with Oladipo Agboluaje, Biyi Bandele and Amber Lone and remounting
Journey to the River Sea its co-production with Unicorn
Theatre.
