Arcola Theatre

Founded in September 2000 by its present artistic director Mehmet Ergen, Arcola Theatre began life in a converted textile factory on the borders of Stoke Newington and Dalston. Today its spacious premises boast one of London's largest and most adaptable fringe spaces. Arcola Theatre consistently creates and hosts high quality theatre with a social, economical and political relevance. Although it receives a London-wide audience, it also represents its local multi-cultural community and provides regular workshops and free drama courses for Hackney residents.

Since it's foundation Arcola Theatre has won the Peter Brook Empty Space Award two years in a row and was given the Time Out Live Award twice for 'Inventive Programming on a Shoestring' in 2003 and 'Favourite Fringe Venue' in 2005. A large number of its productions have been selected as Time Out Critic's Choice. It has gained a reputation for staging work by some of the best contemporary writers and directors including productions by William Gaskill, Dominic Droomgoole, Max Stafford-Clark, David Farr, Bonnie Greer, Adam Rapp, Sam Shepherd and Eric Schossler.

"This is real theatre, poor but purposeful, rooted in its community but speaking to everyone" THE SUNDAY TIMES
