Acting on Health - Immediate Theatre

Meet the Parents:

Over the past 18 months Immediate Theatre has been running a creative sex and relationship education project in partnership with City and Hackney Young People Services (CHYPS). The project aims to use theatre techniques to reduce teenage pregnancy rates and improve sexual health and relationships amongst young people.

Young parents are trained as drama facilitators, giving them specific knowledge about sexual health and relationship issues. They are then paid to deliver these workshops to other young people across the borough. Workshops use drama techniques and scripted material to focus on the realities of young parenthood and general sex and relationship education.

This 'peer-led' format has proved to be an extremely successful way of working with young people. We have also developed similar projects using drama to communicate issues around drug use and raise mental health awareness.

"I like the games. You can learn from the games, that's why I enjoyed it."

"Immediate Theatre touches and empowers users to speak with their own voice and engage with the issues."
