A World Class Stage
Last year, the Empire presented
work from Latin America to Turkey - from the Caribbean to Bangladesh
and from Moldova to Korea. This autumn we'll stage the premiere
of a new Canadian play, Da Kink in my Hair. Our challenge and
our drive comes from presenting enough high quality productions,
home-grown or international, to meet the unquenchable thirst of
all Londoners for good theatre.
The programme reflects London's
diversity and consequently, 40% of our patrons are ethnic minorities.
Such audiences, like all others, come here to celebrate their
culture, their heritage and to belong. Some come to marvel at
the ingenuity, uniqueness of performances from their compatriots.
Last August, we visited Edinburgh
looking for productions that weren't tired and would play to at
least 200 people. Astonishingly, we found Jump! from the Korean
company Ye-Gam Inc - Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon meets Buster
Keaton for the stage. A handshake deal, a phone call to London
with an order to "hold the page" for the season brochure and a
phenomenon was born. Yes we took a financial risk but the response
from audiences and the reviews we received, reminded us why we
do what we do.
